Since the dawn of Industry 4.0, digitalization has in many respects cast a shadow over lean thinking as a silver bullet for operational transformation. 

Though digital technologies promise to disrupt the way in which organizations do business, lean thinking must remain firmly embedded throughout the firm in order to remain competitive and continuously satisfy customers. Process optimization is simply not sufficient.
